ELE 491 – Special Topics I (RF System Design)

Instructor: Dr. Cenk Toker

Time: Monday, 9:40-12:40

Room: E6

Aim: The aim of this course is to give detailed information about the basic building blocks that constitute an RF system such as Low-Noise Amplifiers, Mixers, Oscillators, and Power Amplifiers. The course will cover these materials from a system point of view.

Tentative Outline:

-          Basic Concepts in RF Design (Non-linearity, Noise, Sensitivity, Dynamic Range)

-          Wireless Standards

-          Transceiver Architectures (Heterodyne, Direct-Conversion, Image Reject, Low IF Rx.s, Tx structures)

-          Mixers (Feedthrough, DC offset, Passive Mixers, Upconversion Mixers)

-          Oscillators

Textbook: B. Razavi, RF Microelectronics, Pearson

Assessment: 2 Midterms (2 x 30%), 1 Final Exam (40%)

Prerequisites: It is highly recommended that you have successfully passed ELE 324 Telecommunication Theory I and ELE 315 Electronics II
