The terahertz technologies have attracted interest of researchers for the last two decades, thanks to their potential for allowing wireless data transmission with a bandwidth that can exceed 100 GHz. The first communication window of the terahertz spectrum (0.2-0.32 THz) offers a tremendous opportunity to realize a unique wireless communication system with the widest possible bandwidth that does not suffer from the atmospheric attenuation: 6G Communication Systems. This results in a great competition to develop the first useful terahertz wireless communication. On the other hand, the integrated circuit technology has not achieved the desired performance, which will allow both miniaturization and power efficiency at the same time, because of severe attenuation that the conventional waveguides exhibit. And hence, there is an unavoidable necessity of a novel planar, terahertz waveguide that can replace the conventional planar terahertz waveguides and pave way to develop high-performance terahertz integrated circuits (TICs). As a solution, the Spoof Surface Plasmon Polariton waveguides (SSPP WGs) have recently been shown to suppress the insertion loss of a planar terahertz waveguide lower than 1 dB/mm for the first time in the literature showing an astonishing potential for empowering TICs.
This seminar will cover the first mathematical formulation of the effective dielectric constant of the SSPP WGs at microwave and terahertz bands in the literature, where the formulations are verified by fabrication and measurements. Additionally, the unique solution to the equivalent circuit modelling of the SSPP WGs will be presented, whereas there is no alternative solution that can suppress the solution time from hours of fullwave simulations to sub-second equivalent circuit model simulations. Above all, all these theoretical models fit perfectly with the measurements of the SSPP WGs at terahertz band, where the record-low insertion loss per unit length is presented with the SSPP WGs at 0.3 THz. The seminar will also cover the utilization of the proposed theory for the demonstration of different circuits, antennas, and a reconfigurable terahertz phase shifter at 0.3 THz.
Muhammed Abdullah Unutmaz achieved his BSEE degree from Hacettepe University (HU) in 2013, MSEE and PhD from Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University (AYBU) in 2017 and 2021, respectively. As an undergraduate student, he worked in different research laboratories in HU and Middle East Technical University (METU). He also worked as a research and development engineer for nearly a year in a startup, which has close relationship with a research laboratory in METU. During this time, he contributed different projects in the fields of video/image processing, telecommunication and radar signal processing. He then joined to Tera-Nano Research Group, currently in TOBB Economics and Technology University (TOBB ETU), during his PhD. He is the co-author of seven journal papers and has given three invited talks in international conferences. He is also coauthor of more than ten conference papers. He is selected for Fulbright Visiting Student Researcher scholarship for 2019. He was also a member of HU Robotic Society and founding chair of HuHam, Hacettepe University Ham Radio Society.
